Allen-Bradley 1747-SN PLC Input/Output Module

The Allen-Bradley 1747-SN is not a standard Input/Output (I/O) module, but a Remote I/O (RIO) Scanner module for the SLC 500 family of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)

. Its function is to enable high-speed communication between a SLC 5/02 (or later) processor and remote 1746 I/O chassis, Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and other RIO-compatible devices.

Key functions and features

  • Communication protocol: The module acts as a master device, or "scanner," on a Remote I/O link. It communicates with slave "adapter" modules located in remote chassis to gather data from their connected I/O devices.

  • System expansion: The 1747-SN allows a SLC 500 system to expand beyond its local chassis and control devices that are physically distant from the main processor.

  • Data transfer: It handles the transfer of I/O data and block transfer messages between the SLC processor and the remote RIO devices.

  • Network configuration:

  • The remote devices are connected in a daisy-chain configuration using twisted-pair cable, such as Belden 9463.

  • The maximum communication distance for the RIO link is 10,000 feet (approximately 3,048 meters).

  • The baud rate is selectable and can be set to 57.6, 115.2, or 230.4 kbaud.

  • Device capacity:

    • Normal mode: The scanner can connect to up to 16 devices.

    • Complementary mode: If all connected devices support the "extended node capability," the scanner can connect to up to 32 devices.

    • Installation: The module can be installed in any slot of the SLC 500 local chassis, except for slot 0.

    • System configuration: The 1747-SN is configured using RSLogix 500 software.

    • LED indicators: The front of the module features LED indicators that show the communication and fault status.
